Rihanna's "Kid-Friendly" Performance?

Just because you wear a silly pink outfit, does that make your performance and music appropriate for kids?

Yes, Rihanna changed the lyrics on "Rude Boy," for her set at the Kids Choice Awards which aired on Nickelodeon this past weekend. But, maybe she should have just did "Don't Stop The Music" and called it a night.

Just sayin' ...

Nickelodeon's quirky hit show "Yo Gabba Gabba" has gone mainstream, with Muno making his debut in a Kia Super Bowl commercial!! Was Muno upstaged a bit by the Sock Monkey? Just a little...

Team Umizoomi: Do The Math

Take a boy, a girl and a break-dancing robot and what have you got? "Team Umizoomi"--aka Milli, Geo and Bot--an energetic trio of superheros teaching math skills to preschoolers on Nickelodeon.

Cyma Zarghami, Nickelodeon’s president, said that the network saw an opening and took it. “Everybody’s trying to teach preschoolers how to read and nobody is trying to teach them how to do math,” she said in the New York Times.

The move puts Nickelodeon more squarely in competition with “Sesame Street” on PBS, which has math skills as a major component. So far, Nick has ordered 20 episodes of "Team Umizoomi" and incorporated the show into their website NickJr.com.

At this point, Sascha is more interested in the show's online presence than the actual show. I think the interactive element has her hooked more than the characters. We'll see if she gets hooked on math...

Tripped: Have Kid, Will Travel...And Put In Front Of A Camera

Sascha at Auntie Yani's May 2009

Sascha proved to me on our four-day tri to Auntie Yani's in Pittsburgh that she's ready for her close-up. As usual she was a great travel companion--not a tantrum or meltdown until we were in the car on our way home after our flight was delayed TWO HOURS--and she was amazingly social while we were in the Pitts.

We went to a party full of adults (more like an early evening BBQ with folks watching the NBA Finals), but she made her way around the house introducing herself and after being asked her age, even asked a couple of adults how old they were in return. Too funny! I was proud of her and she did it all without prodding, I just stood back a bit astounded, really.

So I think I feel more comfortable about taking her to the casting agent in the next few weeks. Its the same woman we visited last year who told us Sascha wasn't ready. Agreed. Sascha headed for the door as soon as the woman said "hello." Now that she's at the YMCA a few days a week and has some socialization skills, we're going to try again.

Fingers crossed? Hmm, I don't know exactly how I feel about this yet. Who wouldn't want their kid to be featured in a Gap ad or have their own show on Nickelodeon? But all that comes with it gives me good reason to pause, I think.

By the way, the packing I wrote about here was a super success. I still had to carry: Sascha, a stroller, a booster seat for the car, the cute new luggage, Sascha's Dora The Explorer carry-on and my own carry-on (including my laptop), but I managed all right. I could have used another outfit, lol, but I survived!

Next trip, Myrtle Beach!

I'll keep ya posted!
