What Love Means To Kids...

A group of 4 to 8 year olds were asked: "What does love mean?" I got these great responses to this age-old question in an chain email from my Dad--who knows where they came from, really?--but once you slow down for three minutes to read them, I think you'll feel a little warmer and fuzzier.

When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love...  Rebecca, age 8

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth... Billy, age 4

Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and the go out and smell each other... Karl, age 5

Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs... Chrissy, age 6

Love is what makes you smile when you're tired... Terri, age 4

Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK... Danny, age 7

Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when ou get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and talk more... Emily, age 8

(WOW) Love is what's with you in the room at Christmas is you stop opening presents and listen... Bobby, age 7

If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend you hate... Nikka, age 6

Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday... Noelle, age 7

During my piano recital, I was on stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that...I wasn't scared anymore... Cindy, age 8

My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night... Clare, age 6

When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you... Karen, age 7

Sweets For Your Sweetie

Any excuse to bake, right? I made red velvet and yellow cupcakes for a Valentine's day party at Sascha's nursery class today. Chocolate icing, and Sascha added the finishing touches: sprinkles and candy hearts. Cute, right?

Sascha is great at mixing with a hand-blender for about 30 seconds, then I take over.

This red (no taste) color is great for the cake, it doesn't have that after-taste that regular red dye has.

I divided the batter in half and made half of the cupcakes yellow, and the other half red. Really red.

What I really love: these mini-treats and I think they're great for kids to make at home this weekend. They can help make them if you don't mind little hands covered in red dye.

Red Velvet Cake Balls
1 box red velvet cake mix (cook as directed on box for 13 X 9 cake)
1 can cream cheese frosting (16 oz.)
1 package chocolate bark (regular or white chocolate)
wax paper

1. After cake is cooked and cooled completely, crumble into large bowl.
2. Mix thoroughly with 1 can cream cheese frosting. (It may be easier to use fingers to mix together, but be warned it will get messy.)
3. Roll mixture into quarter size balls and lay on cookie sheet. (Should make 45-50. You can get even more if you use a mini ice cream scooper, but I like to hand roll them.)
4. Chill for several hours. (You can speed this up by putting in the freezer.)
5. Melt chocolate in microwave per directions on package.
6. Roll balls in chocolate and lay on wax paper until firm.

7. Use a spoon to dip and roll in chocolate and then tap off extra.

Chris Rock's Love Advice

Chris Rock may know comedy and hair, but what does he know about relationships?

Here's a great piece of advice that everyone can use. He told Glamour magazine:

"Do buy your cards--birthday, anniversary, Valentine's Day--in bulk. Because everybody waits until the last minute. My dad used to do this. He planned on being married to my mom for the rest of his life, so he'd buy like nine anniversary cards at a time."

Roses Really Smell Like Boo Boo Boo

[Please see Fonzworth Bentley at the 1:17 mark, LOL]

We saw OutKast's "Roses" video on VH1 Soul the other day and Sascha found the line: "Roses really smell like boo boo boo" to be the funniest thing EVER. Kept asking me: "What is he saying?!?!" "Roses smell like what?!?!" She then let out a cackle. I couldn't help but laugh too...isn't that why we all love that song, for that one line?

Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day week. Since I'm notoriously all about the anti-traditional tradition, I'll just put it out there: why can't people celebrate love and loved ones everyday, like what's up with January 12? or March 19? or July 3? :)

What would make the holiday better? A little creativity, some funky gifts, here's what I would request for Valentine's Day:

Jordan Retro 1 Alpha sneakers - I love sneakers, so why not take it back to the beginning with these red and black hoops? I would be more likely to give these than want them. Dope either way. $124.99.

A mixtape mix CD- Remember when someone who liked you made a tape of slow jams or songs you liked or songs that made them think of you? Best gifts ever. That doesn't happen much anymore, so to me, as a music lover, that would be very appreciated. Nowadays we burn a CD, and though the process isn't as laborious as it was back in the day (playing a record, stopping and starting a tape or even recording songs from the radio) the impact would be just as great. As Rob Sheffield says here, Love is a Mix Tape. Priceless.

Facebook gum - If it was true, I'd think this was funny. $2.00

Forget Me Knot ring - Delicate and cute. $54.00

Crazy Sexy Cool necklace - This pendant necklace immediately reminds me of TLC and their album "CrazySexyCool," (remember "Creep"!? "Red Light Special"!?) so I automatically love it. The manufacturer makes pendants with other sayings but they are not safe for printing here, ha! $40.00

Flowers - These still work. But no roses, because, you know...$ Varies.

Simplicity - A dinner date sounds so run-of-the-mill, but pick the right spot and the right person and it could be mo' better. $ Varies.
